Amityville Firefighters Rescued by EEOC

Posted by

No recent Jaws attack at the Amityville, NY,  summer resort town as far as we are aware….Just unlawful age discrimination.

It seems the Village of Amityville and the Amityville Fire Department denied volunteer Amityville firefighters pension credits when they past age 65.  So, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) filed a class age-discrimination suit on behalf 23 volunteer firefighters  against the governmental entities alleging violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.  The Act serves to protect workers over 40 from age-based discrimination in the workplace.

The case recently settled with the firefighters receiving retro benefits for their volunteer efforts after age 65.

As Orlando strategic Human Resources consultants we offer this case as  yet another reason to take workplace anti-discrimination laws very seriously.  Get your management team trained and up to speed.  Learn to spot these issues and to put out the fire before someone rings the alarm for you.
